What is Neighborhood Watch?

Welcome to the CCMD Neighborhood Watch program. Your first question might very well be, “What is Neighborhood Watch?" It may mean different things to different people, but in our neighborhoods it is simply, neighbors looking out after neighbors to keep them safe and secure.

We are a community of over 800 families, and although we are a very safe community we must continue to make a strong effort to keep our community safe and secure. The Mount Dora Police Department (MDPD) can only do so much, the security force can only do so much and the Security Committee can only do so much. We need a strong “front line” of defense and that is where Neighborhood Watch comes in.

Our community has many residents walking the areas for exercise and enjoyment. These residents are also perfect candidates to be on the lookout for solicitors and other unwanted activities in our neighborhoods. Residents playing golf on the golf course, walking their dog, or just driving through the community can be a great assistance in identifying and reporting potential problems.

Once a potential problem is identified it must be communicated. A key element of the CCMD Neighborhood Watch program is communication. Telephone numbers, house addresses and email directories are an important part of our program. It is imperative that any and all incidents of crime or vandalism be reported to the MDPD. These reports are required to keep a history and develop a pattern for any problems that develop. The more and better our communication to neighbors and security contacts the better we can all do our jobs and keep our community secure.

Our Neighborhood Watch program encourages attendance by program participants and interested residents in the monthly meetings that are held. These meetings allow for an exchange of dialogue between participants to help strengthen the program. Many of the meetings will be led by the MDPD participants in our program and will provide useful information for home and neighborhood safety and security.

Duties of Neighborhood Watch Block Captains

The Block Captains have a very important function in maintaining the overall safety and security in the neighborhoods of the Country Club of Mount Dora. They are the back bone of the Neighborhood Watch program and responsible for communicating helpful information to neighbors, security contacts and members of law enforcement. The following are duties that the Block Captain is expected to do:

1. Encourage neighborhood participation in the program.

2. Disseminate information provided to them, from the Security Committee and from local law enforcement, to crime prevention contacts in their neighborhoods.

3. Compile a list of names of persons in their neighborhood who wish to participate in the program, as well as phone numbers and e-mail addresses.

4. Serve as liaisons between your neighborhood and local law enforcement agencies. Stay informed on what is happening in your neighborhood.

5. Be aware of new neighbors and whenever possible inform them of our program and invite them to participate.

6. Assist in building and maintaining an e-mail and telephone notification network within your neighborhood, and for all the CCMD Neighborhood Watch participants, for emergency and information notification.

7. Communicate any suspicious activities to local law enforcement agency and to your Security Committee contact. Inform others in your neighborhood of any such events.

8. Be observant of the goings on in your neighborhood. Keep up to date telephone numbers for MDPD, Security Committee and Double S Security.

9. Communicate, Communicate, Communicate…
